I happened to pick up a book once that was the 3rd one in a series. When I started reading it, I was confused and completely lost. I bought the other two books and then the 3rd made sense. As a matter of fact this series is one of my keepers. So YES, I definitely start at the first book now. So much easier to follow especially if the series is an intricate tale with a lot of characters and locations.

I think I might be obsessive when I look for books now. Since there are so many series out at the moment I tend to check the back cover and see if they show any pics of other books or list them.
I was really confused with which book a series started with once so I stood in the store with my iPhone out looking up the author's website to make sure I got the first book.

I too made the mistake of reading a book from the middle of a series. I read the sixth Anita Blake book by Laurell K. Hamilton first. Whoops!

As for a book budget, yikes - I don't have one! I guess I should. I try to limit myself, and I pay attention to my "must buy" releases.. so if there's a big release month for me, I won't allow myself any others that month. Usually.
